Today starts the last quarter of 2013, and that means we have some fresh 5x bonus categories kicking off with the Chase Freedom® Visa. This quarter the 5x bonus categories are Amazon.com and select department stores, up to the first $1,500 spent.
You need to register to get the bonus. Once you register, you will earn 5% back on your eligible purchases from October 1st – December 31st, but if you prefer Ultimate Reward points as I do, then you can consider this 5x Ultimate Reward points on your Amazon and eligible department store purchases. These Ultimate Reward points are transferable to hotel and airline partners if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Ink Plus® Business Card, or Ink Bold® Business Card.
Here are a few notes about the upcoming 5x categories, taken from the Freedom FAQ site:
- All purchases you make through the checkout at Amazon.com, including digital downloads, Amazon.com Gift Cards, Amazon Fresh orders and Amazon Prime subscriptions are included and items sold by third party merchants through Amazon.com’s marketplace.
- Examples of department stores that do count: Select department stores are the stores that are listed on the Select Department Store list. Some of these are: Macy’s, Nordstrom, Bealls, Kohl’s, JC Penney, Sears, Bloomingdale’s, Neiman Marcus, Sam Moon, and more. These stores have multiple departments that may sell general lines of goods and services; for example: apparel, home furnishings, furniture, electronics, cosmetics and housewares. Each department usually has a separate checkout counter.
- Examples of select department stores that do not count: Membership warehouses, Discount stores, Electronics stores such as Best Buy and h.h.gregg, General Merchandise and Variety stores, Walmart, Target, and Select Department Store gift card purchases made at locations other than the Select Department Stores, are excluded from the Select Department Stores category and will not earn bonus rewards.
For those of us who rely on Amazon for many of our purchases (especially around the holidays), it shouldn’t be too much trouble to hit the $1,500 max for the quarter. I recommend changing your Freedom to your primary credit card in your Amazon account so that you don’t miss out on any points when placing orders online.
Some of these department stores, like Sears, are also known to sell gift cards to other stores in the event that you can’t find everything you want there. If you do some of your shopping online for these department stores, make sure to also go through a shopping portal to really pile on the points. For example, Kohl’s has been at 10x via the Ultimate Rewards portal for quite a while, so 10x + the 5x from this promo = 15x Ultimate Reward points on your Kohl’s purchases!
Here are a few other current department store payouts in the Ultimate Rewards portal.
Sears 5x, Bloomingdale’s 4x, Dillard’s 2x, JC Penney 5x, Macy’s 5x, Nordstrom 5x, and Saks 6x. I will do a full post on this month’s shopping portal payouts at the various online shopping portals in the next day. For now those numbers should give you an idea that it should be easy to stack the Freedom’s 5x with a decent sized online shopping portal payout as well! Happy shopping!
