Just as I promised earlier today, we are giving away a staggering 70,000 Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints in conjunction with my participation in the “SPG Stars” program and the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express card.  This is a super fast giveaway that runs just six hours today only (December 4th) from 11AM – 5PM Eastern, so don’t delay if you want a chance to win!

The rules are very simple:

1. Follow me on Twitter @Mommy_Points

2. Tweet me letting me know where you would want to go during the holidays with 70,000 SPG points using the hashtag #spgamexMP

An example of an eligible Tweet would be:

@Mommy_Points I would head to the Westin Riverfront to do some skiing at Beaver Creek around the holidays! #spgamexMP  (you can even just copy and paste this Tweet if you want!)

Suite we upgraded to earlier this year at Westin Riverfront Resort

3.  To be sure you are entered, make sure in the Tweet you have both @Mommy_Points and the hashtag #spgamexMP

As part of the “SPG Stars” program, Amex also gave me 70,000 points to see how I would use them around the holidays.  There are lots of great uses of 70,000 SPG points like the Nights and Flights program at Category 3 and 4 hotels, so I was torn on what to do.  However, nothing screams holidays to me like a gorgeous ski mountain in Colorado.  I wanted to take this opportunity to stay at a SPG ski property I had never visited, so I was able to get a couple of nights at the St. Regis Aspen right around Christmas by booking just a few months in advance for 30,000 SPG points per night.  That is a massive number of points, but it is the only way we would ever be able to stay here this time of year since rooms around the holidays are well north of $1,000 per night (in fact, they are currently showing $2,000 per night!!).  My stay hasn’t yet happened, but we are very much looking forward to this very unique holiday experience.

The nitty gritty:

To be eligible you have to enter on Twitter between 11AM ET and 5PM Eastern today. You can find all the fine print of the promotion here. Some of the fine print includes:

  • You have to be at least 18 and a legal resident of the fifty (50) United States or District of Columbia
  • Only one entry is allowed per person/Twitter account
  • Winner will be selected at random
  • Winner is responsible for paying taxes on the value of the prize ($1750 ARV with SPG points being valued at 2.5 cents per point, and yes I have the same tax issues with the 70k points I was given)
  • Winner must have or open a SPG account to be awarded the prize
  • A winner will be contacted within 24 hours and announced both here and on Twitter

Please let me know in the comments section if you have any questions (remember entries are accepted only on Twitter as outlined above).  Good luck!

Disclosure: I do receive a commission if you are approved for a credit card using one of my affiliate links, and did receive 70k points myself as part of this giveaway.  As always, thanks for your support.

  10. Robert Hanson says:

Jon +1 And I don’t want to either.

I wish the earlier post had made clear it would require signing up for Twitter to enter. Had I known I wouldn’t have bothered to come back for the contest. :(

  11. Brian S says:

Have a great time in Aspen! My wife and I spent a wonderful Christmas week at the St. Regis when it was only 12k points/night (8 or 9 years ago). The hotel and the town go all out for Christmas. It was one of our best vacations ever.

  12. LarryInNYC says:

Dislike Twitter, but signed up anyway for this lottery.

Alas, did not read far enough into the post to read about the tax implications. Ouch!!! Means the points would wind up costing a penny or more each in taxes — still a nice deal, but definitely in the range where I probably wouldn’t just go out and buy them.

  13. Archon1995 says:

Le sigh. Once again I’m not able to try for it due to IT security at work. Ah, well…one of these days!

  14. Mommy Points says:

Sorry for those who don’t like Twitter. It really is worth it to have Twitter just for miles and points deals, but I do giveaways on the blog whenever I can. Amex makes the rules on this one though so good luck for those who decide to enter!

  15. Jason says:

Thanks Mommy Points! We appreciate all you do here!!!

  16. Robert says:

Thanks for the info would love to use those points

  17. Lively says:

May the best random tweet win. Love MP!

  18. Zoran says:

Would love to use the points to stay at the Westin in Key West. Cold weather coming to Chicago this weekend and next week.

  19. Denise says:

So fun! Thanks!! Sent my tweet and had the bf do it, too!

  20. Robert says:

    Thank you Points.

  21. Lisa says:

What is the likelihood one would really be taxed. I’ve never been taxed on the points I’ve gotten from any of the banks…

  22. mommypoints says:

Lisa, in this case they will issue you a 1099 since the value of the prize you are winning is over $500 by their count. This is handled differently from sign-up bonuses you get from the banks.

  23. E says:

So, how much tax, am I paying for this then?? I don’t get it.

I wish if whoever win, get an email instead of post here or twitter because sometime I forget to even check.

But, this is such a great one with this much point.

  24. E says:

Oh $1099, I just saw that. *man, i wish there is an edit button here*

  25. Vicky says:

Hmm just sent my first ever tweet but can’t see it on the MommyPoints twitter page. Oh well whatever, that’s the type of crap that makes me hate these silly social media competitions.

  26. Ryan says:

    My first tweet ever!!

  27. mommypoints says:

E, if you win it will be posted here, tweeted, and you will get a direct message on twitter.
Vicky, if you used @mommy_points and the hashtag #spgamexMP then it is counted. However, if you tell me your twitter name I can double check that it looks good.
    Ryan, awesome! Congrats!

  28. LarryInNYC says:

@E: If you were to win, you would have to report the value of the prize ($1750) on your income tax as income. That would then be taxed by the US (and probably your state) and whatever your regular tax rate is. Figure you’ll pay between a quarter and a third of the value of prize (up to about $600) in additional taxes.
I believe there is a mechanism to use for disputing the valuation of the prize, so if you feel you can make a good argument that the points are only worth, for instance, $250 then you would report that amount instead as income and pay a percentage of that amount in taxes.

  29. Pam H says:

I also just signed up for twitter and sent my first tweet, but it does not show up on your tweets…bummer. I included spgamexMP and it said sent…my twitter name is dogsngolf1. New to twitter.

  30. mommypoints says:

Larry, that is all my understanding as well.
Pam, yours looks good except I see two of them. Delete one. :)

  31. TomT says:

I wish I wish I wish.. we actually do want to go to Beaver Creek, so copy and paste was perfect fit

  32. Chili Palmer says:

So do we have a winner? It’s probably me – but I just want to know for sure.

  33. Steve says:

It’s too bad you think skiing in Colorado would beat using those points skiing in Utah (with better snow) at Deer Valley.

  34. mommypoints says:

Chili, winner was announced on Twitter last night and on a blog post just now. ;)
Steve, Utah is on my list for sure, but Colorado worked best for this short trip…and it is just a magical place for my family. Love Utah, too, though!
