With just an overnight in Munich after an exhausting few days in Sicily I decided to book the Sheraton Munich Airport, which was a reasonable €99 including tax. In the past I’ve stayed at the Le Meridien Munich and Sheraton Arabellapark Munich, both of which I enjoyed, though I was curious to check out another option closer to the airport.
While the hotel has an airport shuttle which costs €5 per person, it stops running at 10:45PM, so instead we took a taxi which cost us €20 and got us there within 10 minutes.
I’m sick of generic Sheratons, so I loved the exterior of the hotel and how un-Sheraton it looked.

The lobby consisted of a bar and business center, though we headed straight for check-in, where we were quickly assisted.

We were assigned a junior suite, and also informed we’d receive free internet. As a Platinum member I chose breakfast as the amenity (in lieu of 500 Starpoints), and was also given a 20% off voucher for the restaurant on account of my status.

Okay, the room was really tired looking, though again, I was so thrilled by how un-generic this place was that I loved it. At the entrance was a luggage rack, and further in the room was the king bed and a desk.

Over to the right side were two chairs, which I guess is what technically made this a “junior suite.” Still not entirely convinced it’s a junior suite since by my definition a junior suite has at least a couch, but at the very least it was a spacious executive room.

The room faced the street that runs along the hotel, which was nice and quiet. You’ve gotta love how rural the location is.

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s restaurant, Zur Schwaige, from 6AM till 10:30AM. Again, the restaurant was adorably German, no different than a restaurant in my family’s hometown in Germany.

As a Platinum member you’re technically only entitled to continental breakfast, though this hotel generously gives Platinum members access to the full buffet, as I find is frequently the case abroad. The buffet was extensive, with all kinds of fresh bread, pastries, meat, cheese, etc. I’ll let the pictures do the talking for the most part, though I’ll note that I found it interesting that there was no fruit at all at the buffet (then again fruit isn’t a common part of breakfast in Germany, so…).

In the terms of the hotel’s facilities, it had a fairly small indoor pool. I love how just about every indoor pool in Germany seems to have fake palm trees.

There were also showers, a steam room, and a sauna.

The day of departure we took a shuttle to the airport at around noon. As I said above it cost €5 per person, and tickets could be purchased from the front desk.

On the whole the hotel is extremely dated, though the service was friendly and there was something just so damn charming about the place, so I really liked it. I’d return in a heartbeat if I had an overnight at the airport.
I just checked out of this hotel a couple of hours ago. Loved it. I'm only SPG Gold but I did get an upgrade, not something that I ever get at any SPG hotels. It wasn't to a suite but was to an executive floor/room. Would have loved that 20% off food coupon as I ended up spending 30 euro on dinner last night. It was an excellent meal.

Coming from the airport the shuttle picks people up at Terminal 2 then a few minutes later Terminal 1. It makes a stop at the NH hotel and then the Sheraton. In the morning first stop from the Sheraton is Terminal 2.
I wasn't charged for the shuttle last night coming in from the airport. Not really sure why. I think you have to actually book the shuttle via hotel and pay them? Driver just had me sign in. When I checked in to the hotel I was offered to pre-pay for the shuttle for this morning and had it charged to my room. I was given a ticket that the driver collected this morning.
Note that the Kempinski, although pretty nice overall, has some pretty poor basic rooms as well and is not what you think of with the name compared to some of their other properties IMO. It's a typical airport hotel. Nice restaurant and open atrium area and you can't beat the location for a short layover, but it ain't that great!
Stayed there couple of times although never taken the airport shuttle. For those with their own transportation there is self-parking available for a fee.

The Sheraton in Munich is in the Arabellapark area, which isn't all that central if location is very important. It's a subway stop or two from where you want to be, and there isn't much to do in the immediate area. That being said, that may translate into a good deal.
Meanwhile the Le Meridien is very central, the only SPG property in Munich that is, really.
I need to plan a meeting for about 45 people in Munich for May 2014. I had the BEST experience planning the May 2013 meeting at the Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel and Towers. Do you know anything about the Sheratons in Munich that are NOT by the airport? My attendees want to stay somewhere nice but not outrageously priced. Some thought that the HK hotel at $241 which included a $30 huge breakfast buffet and...

We stayed here during Oktoberfest last year. While away from the city center, it was an easy 40min train ride into town and the price during this peak time was only 7k spg points. Great deal! I have no status with SPG and I'm pretty sure that we were also given the restaurant discount, though wifi was not free in the room. Computers in the lobby had free wifi though.
@ Andyandy -- Yes, I've seen it before and looks like an awesome hotel, though I needed Starwood stay credits and the Sheraton was much cheaper, so decided that would be the best option especially since I haven't reviewed it yet. If I have a shorter layover in the future I'll probably stay at the Hotel Kempinski.
I stayed at the Residence Inn Munich East and loved it! Free full breakfast for everyone and only 20K marriot points (25K now). Room had free nespresso too.
Lucky, did consider the Kempinski @ MUC? I'd definitely recommend it for convenience, hands down. During my last stay, the rates were competitive with the other "airport" hotels.
