- Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express
The current bonus is for 10,000 Starpoints after the first purchase, and an additional 15,000 Starpoints after spending $5,000 within six months. The nice thing about Starpoints is how versatile they are. They can efficiently be redeemed for hotel stays, and can also be converted to airline miles at a 1:1 ratio, with a 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points transferred. So for everyday, “unbonused” spend this is generally the best card out there since you’re earning 1.25 miles per dollar when transferring in the right increments.
Starwood also has some unique airline transfer partners that other programs don’t have, like Japan Airlines. For example, Japan Airlines partners with Emirates and charges just 85,000 miles roundtrip between New York and Dubai in business class, which is just 70,000 Starpoints when you factor in the 5,000 point bonus for every 20,000 points transferred.
You can be approved for both the personal and business versions of the SPG American Express, and Starwood lets you make household transfers for members registered at the same address, which is useful as well for “pooling” points.
In my case, I’m happy paying the annual fee year after year on both the personal and business cards for the two elite qualifying stays and five elite qualifying nights I get towards Starwood status for having each card. It’s always nice to start the year with four elite qualifying stays and 10 elite qualifying nights towards Starwood Platinum status.
