10K Women Compete to Become China Southern Flight Attendants…see it to believe it, a reality competition

by Adam

It’s like stepping back in time, you have to see the video from China Southern’s latest flight attendant competition recently held in Nanjing. This is the tenth such competition held in recent years and is the only way to become a flight attendant for the airline. While the requirements might be antiquated, the TV reality competition is anything but…allowing the public to vote for their favorite contestant via social media, text, and internet voting.  So what exactly is the process? Here’s a rough translation…

The assessment process includes visual, written tests, professional and degree examinations, and thorough physical examinations. Cultural qualities, physical fitness, career potential, expressive facial structure, and adaptability are judged by China Southern management and VIP China Southern frequent travelers (a FF perk)! Women are asked to remove their shoes and stockings to obtain accurate height measurements. In addition, they must lay their fingers out flat to get an accurate hand measurement.  The 7,000-10,000 applicant pool is narrowed by these and then the public is invited to vote via internet, phone, and text message for their favorite potential flight attendant. Flight attendants can enter the contest through the support of their college or university! Men take part as well, though they are judged on safety awareness, on-board service potential, height, and physique. Ability to protect the flight and provide security is mandatory for the men. Winning competitors are invited to become intern flight attendants where they must go through 3-6 months of training while receiving 1,000 yuan ($161) a month. They are also required to pay a training fee of $1300-$1600 for books, uniforms, and equipment. Wages for first year flight attendants are said to average between 5,000 to 10,000 yuan ($800-$1600) a month depending on routes assigned.

Want to sample the services of the new flight attendants? Remember that China Southern’s A380 service from LAX is a great use of Delta SkyMiles.  I’ve posted about how to find amazing business class availability on the A380 from LAX to Guangzhou continuing on to Australia, Bali, Bangkok, Maldives, Singapore, and all over the rest of Asia. I’ve also posted answers to reader questions on SkyMiles redemptions on these routings.
