Boeing to Build World’s Longest-Range Passenger Jet

by Adam

Just a few weeks ago, airlines were given a preview of another 777 refresh code-named 778X. The 8X will be the world’s longest-range passenger jet and best the 777-200LR with a range of 9,500 nautical miles (17,600 km)! This is in addition to the 777-9X, a 400-seat version of the 777. Tim Hepher and Praveen Menon from Reuters cover what’s known so far.

Randy Tinseth, vice president of Boeing marketing, told financiers in January the 777X would have “significantly lower operating cost” and greater payload and range ability. Airbus says its 350-seater is the right size and costs less to run. As both sides trot out competing claims, the 777 vs A350 contest is likely to spark a fierce debate on technology – just as the industry digests the lessons of recent technical troubles on the 787 Dreamliner and, before that, the A380 superjumbo.

It reaches a point where who WANTS to stay on a plane that long?

Hmm, aviation geeks flying in first class on a holiday? I would! In front, not at the back though!

the sad thing is that it’ll be used by EK on their 19 hour flights to the edge of the world while squeezing Y pax in 3-4-3

both try SQ and TG tried premium economy on their A340-500 flights and totally failed (only SQ’s all J barely survived for a bit longer)

hopefully JL’s new 42″ Y+ could be a model for the rest of the world of what a good Y+ product should be

The airlines will have to add a physician/therapist to the crew and add a workout space – thrombosis airlines. Singapore dumped the NY-Sing route and soon they’re ending the Sing-LAX route. There is a limit IMHO – even if you’re holding an F ticket in a suite – you’re still in a tin can inhaling recycled air. How many hours of IFE movies, drinks, food, sitting, sleep can one endure? And what if you have a horrible seatmate. The real issue for aviation: since the demise of the Concorde why hasn’t there been a push to build a replacement? With such speeds coupled with range then it would make sense. At the present – and 50 years – 500 knots avg. and 18,000KM, forget it! When Concorde ended, aviation history took a step back and hasn’t broke even since, unless you consider larger windows and mood lighting an enhancement vs. speed.

Passenger duration is a good point. However going 8-9 thousand miles in one shot is better than multiple stops, of changing airplanes or sitting in same plane for an hour longing while passengers exit and new passenger re-load the aircraft at some hot airport. I’d rather fly on, get up and walk around onboard for a minute, than land and take-off again with new passenger load plopping down next to me.
