KLM Royal Dutch Airlines To Introduce Social Network Seat Selections - Points Miles and Martinis

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced that in 2012 they will introduce the ability to select your seat mate from your social network account with Facebook and LinkedIn. Users will have the ability to link their social media accounts to their KLM flight information. This information will then be publicly available for all users to see.

How It Works

  • Link your facebook to your KLM flight information
  • Check in online
  • Find a seatmate through your social network

Bottom Line

Its not clear if this will help land that elusive deal, set up a cab share to the airport or just help make introductions for the mile high club. Malaysia is also reported to roll out a similar service in 2012. One thing is for sure, AirTroductions has already rolled out a similar service. With over 26,000 registered AirTroductions users they appear to have found a service customers want.

This seems odd. The only time I have ever been on a flight with a friend who didn’t coordinate with me was when we were going to the same wedding. How many thousands of “friends” would a person need to have to luck out and find someone you “know” on the same flight?

If you live in a smaller town, with a smaller airport, the odds change in your favor.

Well now, this is an interesting experiment.

@Scottrick – I bet there are a ton of people / recruiters on LinkedIn who may think this is useful and possibly people on Facebook that have 1,000+ “friends”

@m henner – I’m a gambling man, and odds are you are right

@aadvantagegeek – We’ll be interesting to see if it pans out. The AirTroductions company is rumored to have been shut down, but the website is still up. Will be looking for more news on ways to connect through social media in 2012.
