Last week I spent a few hours at the Hyatt Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia as a Platinum member. The treatment received was nothing less than great. It had been a few years since I had let my Hyatt Diamond status lapse and this was my first stay as a Platinum member in quit some time.

The day after returning home, I received this nice note from the Hyatt team and Jeff Zidell welcoming me back to the benefits of Hyatt Diamond status.

  1. I have stayed Platinum and not gone out of my way to regain Gold as I was annoyed that all it takes to get Platinum is a credit card. I EARNED my platinum with paid stays. I think there should be easier challenge for Diamond for those with earned Platinum who get the credit card.

I have waited until after I lost Diamond status to apply for the credit card 1) because I preferred two free nights and upto 10 nights of upgrade twice a year to two free suite nights total and when I asked when I was Diamond if I could opt for the Platinum benefits when I got the credit card instead of the Diamond benefits they told me absolutely not (and I even asked to talk with a supervisor)\
    2) I am annoyed at the dilution of Platinum status if all one has to do is get a credit card. I feel I am not being rewarded for my loyalty with my paid stays

  2. So was this purely a situation where as a blogger you received preferential treatment so as to gain favorable coverage?

  3. Hi PH – That is pure comedy. This was an automated email from Hyatt that went out via email a few days after I hit Diamond status. If that counts as preferrential treatment, then yes, me along with EVERY new Hyatt Diamond member received the treatment. I have been Diamond status with Hyatt well before I started the blog a few years ago. I’m well on my way to earning Hyatt Lifetime Diamond status because of nights I spend in beds, not because I have a blog.

  4. I misread your statement “it had been a few years since I let my Hyatt Diamond member status lapse”. I took that to mean that you had not been a Hyatt Diamond member for the last few years; now I think you mean that you had always successfully maintained your Hyatt Diamond member status in recent years and only had let it lapse for this year.

Your July 19 posting indicates that your Hyatt Penn’s Landing stay was indeed your 25th stay and thus earning you Diamond for next year per the usual public qualification mechanism. I’m a little puzzled that you managed to have 24 stays earlier this year without experiencing being merely Platinum status, but I suppose you COULD have squeezed in 24 stays in January and February with carryover Diamond status from 2011.

You of course know your own history just fine, but I think if you look at the content of this blog posting, it’s not hard to see how I as a reader went “Hey, how did this person go from not having experienced any stays as a Platinum member this entire year to staying one time as a Platinum member to receiving Diamond status!”
