Tarriance In Wine Country – Ten Top 2013 Wine Travel Destinations According To Wine Enthusiast - Points Miles and Martinis

Wine Enthusiast has come out with their recommendations for the 10 best Wine Travel Destinations of 2013. The locations range from some of the most well known regions to the less known regions all around the world. This can have a significant impact on travel in 2013, at the very least it may for the Weekly Flyers as we’ve planned travel around wine regions in the past.

Top 10 Wine Travel Destinations According to Wine Enthusiast

This is interesting to us because we’ve really enjoyed sojourning in wine regions during a brief break in travel.

For example, we’ve been to California’s wine regions including Russian River Valley, Napa, and Sonoma several times and usually find a nice place in or near San Francisco for our home base. We’ve also experienced the sweet wine of Washington state during a visit to the San Juan islands to the west. We explored Italy’s Tuscan country side a few years ago during a visit to Rome on our way to the island of Sardinia. Not long after that, we visited France’s champagne houses near the town of Eperney on our way back from the Seychelles and Mauritius. So we’ve redirected course a few times just for wine.

And we couldn’t visit the island of Mallorca in Spain without tasting some of the earthy blends from the Rioja region. Our visit to Buenos Aires was cut short and we didn’t get to visit a winery near Mendoza, but that didn’t prevent us from taking tasting notes during our stay at the Park Hyatt Buenos Aires.

Wine Tasting

We aren’t alone here, I know at least a few people who are with us on this, especially from a recent excursion into South Africa’s wine country.

We haven’t come close to visiting all of the wineries we’d like but we are on our way and this list certainly helps provide a little more thought into planning the next visit.

Have you ever diverted a trip for a tasting? What’s on your 2013 wine tasting tour?

The Monticello Wine Trail in Virginia – great place for wine and history

Nice to see that Oregon’s Willamette Valley made in on a global list, its definitely deserving. We have some great Pinot Noir’s out here and the weather is perfect in the early and late summer.

I recently travelled through La Rioja – phenomenal wine country. Larger bodegas worth checking out (architecturally) are Ysios, Baigorri, and Marques de Riscal. Also worth looking into staying at Viura in Villabuena which is near it all.

Presumably this list is about tourism, not wine, as many of the best wine regions are missing. I’d definitely support Stellenbosch but I’m not so sure about Monterey, CA – I thought it was all trinkets and knick-knacks with over-priced wine.
