There is so much to do on Maui it can make your headspin. So before we arrived on Maui to celebrate our second anniversary, I reserved a few day trip activities to keep us busy when not drinking by the pool at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua.
I booked a rental car to explore the Garden of the Gods and Shipwrecked beach on neighboring island Lanai as well as a bike rental tour to the top of Mount haleakala which stands at 10,023 feet.
There are a number of places to rent bikes. There are generally two options. You can get to the top of the mountain and see the sun rise inside the volcano crater or you can go to the bike drop off area, which still has fantastic views, and bike down from there. We chose the second option.
Our itinerary would require us to wake up early before dawn, head to Haleakala Bike Company to take in the sun rise from above the clouds and bike down the 10,000 feet mountain to the shores below where we would have lunch before heading back to the sanctuary which is the Ritz Carlton.
Right about now I think Mrs Weekly Flyer was wispering through the mask that she wasn’t sure if she could do it. But I coached her through the first hundred feet or so and we were off.
Once we were half way down the scenery changed. There were also multiple paths to take, so it is wise to study the map before you depart down the mountain.
We stopped for lunch on the shore near Paia. I can’t remember the name of the restaurant but it was a nice stopping point on the way back to Kapalua. Have you been to this restaurant and do you know the name?
We enjoyed some cold ones with a view and caught up on the ride down the mountain.
Bottom Line
Biking Haleakala was exhilarating. Mrs Weekly Flyer didn’t think she could do it, but once we were passed by two grandma’s on bike’s she found her speed to take the mountain’s winding roads.
I’d highly suggest able bodied folks try this day trip out next time on Maui.
