Transferring American Express points to your favorite loyalty program is a very simple and easy process. After a few steps, you’ll have those points transferred, often instantly, to your travel program and available to redeem for that award you’ve been looking for. One basic piece of advice is to make sure your award is available before you transfer the points into your program. You don’t want to transfer the points and then get those points “stuck” in that program.

American Express Membership Rewards program allows members to earn points with everyday spend on select American Express credit cards like:

These points can be redeemed for a number of items from gift cards to products to travel experiences. But I’ve found I get the best value from my American Express Membership Rewards points when I transfer them into one of the many partner travel programs. I can transfer my American Express points to a large number of airline and hotel programs, then redeem them for awards like free flights and free hotel stays.

Step 1: Log in to your American Express Membership Rewards Account

Log-in to your American Express account online at the American Express website. A screen will display with all of your cards at the top right hand corner that you may have registered in your American Express account. Ignore the credit card pictures and look below them to the right.

Step 2: Select “Go To Membership Rewards”

On the right hand side of the Account Home page, you’ll see a “Go To Membership Rewards” hyperlink below your membership rewards information. Select this link to navigate to the Membership Rewards section.

  1. Keep in mind too that there are often bonus miles for transfers from different airlines, i usually wait for those. Also for the math challenged, there is a reverse calculation button to figure the points needed for miles.

  2. I’ve heard that you can transfer Rewards Points to another person if they already have a Rewards Points account and are living in the same household. Is that true? I’ve also heard you can transfer to a different person’s travel partner account (for example, I could transfer my AMEX points to a friend’s Delta Skymiles account). Any truth to that? I know for a fact that transferring to a partner account with a different name does NOT work with Starwoods Points. I was hoping it might work with AMEX though.
