American Airlines New York LaGuardia Expansion - Points Miles and Martinis


As part of the merger between US Airways and American Airlines, there will be some slot pair divestitures at both New York and Washington Reagan Airport.

This is a result of the DOJ-required 17 slot pair divestitures at LGA, American will no longer operate nonstop service to Atlanta, Cleveland and Minneapolis.

However, changes to the schedule made possible by the combined network of American and US Airways will provide opportunities for new service to 10 communities at LaGuardia.

New service from New York (LaGuardia) includes:

  • Charlottesville, Va.
  • Little Rock, Ark.
  • Roanoke, Va.
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Louisville, Ky.
  • Wilmington, N.C.
  • Greensboro, N.C.
  • Norfolk, Va.
  • Knoxville, Tenn.
  • Richmond, Va.

In December 2013, American and US Airways finalized the DOJ-approved sale of slots and related assets at LGA with agreements that allow the appropriate time for American and the acquiring airlines to transition their operations and minimize the disruption to customers.

Bottom Line

With all mergers, there are always network changes, but for New Yorkers this can be seen as a win with new service to these 10 new markets from LaGuardia on American.

With the cut of Atlanta and Minneapolis, Delta has these two markets covered quite well from LaGuardia, and with the cut from Cleveland, United offers many daily flights to there, so at LaGuardia overall it’s a positive change for American.

The same can’t be said at Washington Reagan where American is cutting 17 cities that it currently serves from there.

    Mark – That ATL-LGA flight on American’s CRJ was empty every Monday morning and same thing on Thursday on the return. Not sure it was even close to making a profit for them. Heck, flight attendants would sit in First Class with a few extra empty seats next to them.

    As Mark said, the loss of competition for CLE, MSP and ATL will ultimately drive up prices. In fact, it appears the whole point of the DOJ Antitrust action was not to provide more competition & help consumers, but for other airlines to poach slots and gain more profit for themselves.
