Just a head’s up for those travelers who are planning this week, there is expected to be bad weather in the Northeast, and because of this many airlines are offering waived change fees and fare differences if you’re looking to make a change due to the bad weather.
Right now American, Delta, Virgin America, and US Airways have issued travel waivers.
Here’s a run down of the change fee waivers and policies by airline:
American Airlines: Due to winter weather in the Northeast U.S., American Airlines offers you the convenience to change your plans. You may change flights as shown if your itinerary includes any of the listed airports and you are ticketed to travel on American Airlines.
If you are traveling to, through or from:
- Baltimore, MD (BWI)
- Boston, MA (BOS)
- Charleston, WV (CRW)
- Harrisburg, PA (MDT)
- Hartford, CT (BDL)
- New York Kennedy, NY (JFK)
- New York LaGuardia, NY (LGA)

- Philadelphia, PA (PHL)

Virgin America: Travel Waiver: Travel Waiver for BOS, EWR, JFK, PHL, IAD and DCA: Guests with confirmed flights to or from BOS, EWR, JFK, PHL, IAD and DCA on Jan. 20-22, 2014, may change their travel dates without paying change fees or the difference in fares for travel through Jan. 24, 2014. Guests can change to available flights between Jan. 20-24, 2014 on the same route as the original itinerary and within the same class of service.
US Airways: US Airways issued a travel advisory If you are scheduled to travel January 21 or 22, your travel date may be changed to travel January 20, 21, 22, 23 or 24. This applies to those traveling to/from Halifax, Canada ; Hartford, CT ; New Haven, CT ; Washington, DC (Reagan National) ; Washington, DC (Dulles Int’l Airport) ; Baltimore, MD ; Salisbury, MD ; Boston, MA ; Newark, NJ ; Islip, NY ; New York, NY (LaGuardia) ; New York, NY (JFK Airport) ; Newburgh, NY ; White Plains, NY ; Allentown, PA ; Harrisburg, PA ; Philadelphia, PA ; Scranton, PA ; Providence, RI ; Charlottesville, VA ; Lynchburg, VA ; Richmond, VA ; Roanoke, VA ; Charleston, WV ; Huntington, WV

Why has UA not yet released a issued a travel advisory? Living on the west coast I am frustrated that UA tries to push my travel via ORD or EWR rather than direct. While that might seem a good idea for them to maximize use of those hubs, from a travelers point of view I would rather avoid them during the winter like the plague. I would argue that UA should lay on more flights from west coast to EU to avoid having travelers trapped – a customer friendly use of a network. That way I’ll fly UA during the winter rather than LH.
