Korean Air recently announced they’ll start a new non-stop service to the United States with the addition of service to Houston. This flight will be operated by one of their Boeing 777 planes equipped with First, Business and Coach class service.
This means there is a new route to Asia on an award with Korean Air and their partner’s miles. Especially good news for Delta flyers given the changes to the Delta Business Class award this past week.
So a quick look at award availability and the results are showing plenty of days where you can pick up 2 award seats in First Class using Korean miles (sorry Delta flyers-you can only redeem for Business Class).
Business Class is harder to find. I logged into my Korean Air account and was able to find availability on the May 2nd (the inaugural flight from Houston) for 52,500 in Prestige Class (Business) or 62,500 in Prestige Sleeper (First) seat.
Bottom Line
Korean Air will begin service to Houston in May of 2014 opening more award routes to Asia and beyond.

Delta of course does not let you redeem for first class.

Expertflyer does not show Korean business class long haul, availability displays only on a handful of predominantly intra-Asia routes.
Remember that Delta blacks out travel on Korean for EVERY ROUTE on ANY dates that Korean has blackouts for ANY route. As a result, about a third of the year is blacked out from Delta redemption. Just because you find space on the Korean website doesn’t mean it’ll be bookable by Delta as a result — you have to (1) make sure the availability you’re offered is at the low level/non-peak demand date price and then (2) check your dates to ensure they are not peak dates for Korean on ANY route not just the route you’re trying to fly.
I recently picked up the Korean Air Visa Signature with a 40,000 point signup bonus (I had an account with them from a previous points transfer, but a balance of 0 in the account and no status). Another account that has never had points in it got offered that as well. Last summer the standard bonus was 20,000 points.
Thanks for the comment Gary. Wasn’t sure why Delta wouldn’t show any of the Business availability I was seeing on Korean Air. Of course Delta doesn’t allow First class redemptions. Maybe that wasn’t clearly stated-First availability is there…if you have Korean miles to spend on it.

Any idea how I can find out if the ICN-DFW route has fully-flat prestige sleeper and not the angle-flat?
