Jet Airways spreads its (Partner) wings

Jet Airways-US Airways.JPG

Jet Airways is one of the best airlines in India. It has a large international presence and has superb service. So far it has resisted joining an alliance. It’s two main competitors in India have both joined an Alliance. Kingfisher joined OneWorld and Air India has been working on completing its joining Star Alliance. The fact that it has been ‘working’ on it for a couple of years is another story for another post.

Jet Airways announced yesterday that it has formed a partnership with US Airways. This is a mileage alliance – earn and redeem miles and may extend to code-sharing. If one looks at the complete list of airline partners Jet Airways has, they are across the spectrum. All three alliances are represented and so are non-alliance airlines like Emirates and Etihad.

With the addition of US Airways, one does however notice the balance now tilting towards Star Alliance. Nine of the partners are in Star Alliance! There are more airlines in Star Alliance than any other alliance, but this does rekindle talk on Jet Airways joining Star Alliance. Personally, being a Star Alliance loyalist, I hope this happens. I will take them over Air India any day. Having them on board along with Air India is even better.

  1. Air India has finished integration into a single carrier code AI. So we should see it join *A by end of summer.
