United is offering a 20% discount on coach awards to Europe, that’s roundtrip for 48,000 miles.

And availability is about the best that it gets, because the travel period is for the off-season: book by November 15 for travel between January 15 and March 13.

The discount applies to saver award inventory on United and United Express only, and for travel between Europe and the 48 contiguous U.S. states plus Alaska and also Canada.

The rules require a 21-day advance purchase, which is odd since by definition the discount can only be obtained with a minimum two month advance purchase.

Open jaws are permitted, and the strange example given is flying into New York-JFK and out of Newark — I say that’s strange because those are usually considered to be ‘co-terminals’ and the same city, and thus not an open jaw. But the rules would permit you to fly into, say, Zurich and back from Paris.

As part of this promotion they’re also offering 10% off on redeeming miles for hotel nights, but that piece interests me not at all.

It says “Open jaw allowed within the same region” whatever that means

The relevant regions are only North America and Europe *anyway* so it doesn’t mean anything for this promo.

Not surprised to see this sale. Winter airfares across the Pond seem astronomical to me (like almost $1000 from NYC to Paris) so it would make sense that not all the seats will be sold to revenue customers.

tried to standby on a ORD – EWR flight when my ORD – LGA flight was delayed, and was informed that EWR is not consider a co-terminal with LGA (to my surprise), so maybe the same applies for jfk…
