American Express Centurion (“Black Card”) members have received US Airways Platinum status since 2007.

This was a benefit inherited from the US Airways-America West merger, where Centurion cardholders had FlightFund Gold status which was one level below top tier at the time.

The American Express relationship with US Airways and American Airlines ends March 22. And US Airways has extended the status of current elite members through the end of March.

Yesterday I wondered how these two changes would interact with each other — since Black Card Platinum members’ status would last through the end of the current American Express relationship, I wondered whether they’d be able to have their status extended prior to March 22nd.

One of my Centurion cardmember readers forwarded American Express’ response to him on this very subject:

Since you are currently enrolled, you will have the U.S. Airways Platinum status through Feb. 28, 2015

So even though current US Airways status extends past the end of the relationship the airline has with Amex, that status will still be extended through February 28, 2015.

Any Black Card holders out there who have not signed up for US Airways Platinum need to do it before March 22nd.

    OK — I just confirmed it, they were able to come to an agreement with US Airways to keep platinum status for one more year through February 2015. The club access is obviously gone.

    This may be common knowledge , I was also told they are opening a club this year in San Francisco and La Guardia Airport

    @Stephen the black card has been pretty bad, the first good news was the introduction of the platinum award after years of lost benefits. Then they add stupid benefits like a 200.00 credit towards the airline of your choice. If I am paying as much as I am to keep the card, do they really think I care about a $200.00 credit, just lower the price of the card. I get the card for the travel benefits which have faded away. if they want to add value back they should make it double points on all purchases and or do whatever it takes to have meaningful travel partners. Just my opinion.

    Centurion has become strictly a status card. The benefit advantage over Platinum has been negligible for years.
    Amex has come to realize that there are enough people who prize having it and will keep it despite the ever decreasing benefits.
