I’ve never stayed at a La Quinta. From having read Lamar Muse’s excellent autobiography about his years as Southwest Airlines’ founding President, I recall the story of the La Quinta chain (its founder was a Southwest board member). Apparently the name derives from the founder’s search for the cheapest furnishings possible. They had a Southwestern motif, and so he chose a name to match.
Free points, of course, are free points. Even if the Urban Dictionary claims ‘La Quinta’ means “next to Denny’s.” Points convert to a variety of currencies although you need 6000 points to do so. You can also earn free points via their Facebook game.

I have stayed at La Quinta and they’re fine, nothing special, good for when you need a place on the road.
The La Quinta Play and Stay game has been a bit of a disappointment. When I first read about it in December, bloggers were raving about how they won thousands of points in a few days and you could probably get two free days by the end of the promotion. I started playing it and I won, like… 50 points here and there. More recently, it seems like the promotion has “run out” of LQ points to give. For five days in a row, I’ve gotten nothing but “tokens” that let you spin and spin more, but no LQ points.
I agree with Steve. I have played this game since day #1 and still only have 2,050 points. Now they’ve newly added 5 point spins. I didn’t even win that.

Yeah – the last 2 days I’ve gotten zero points on both my and my wife’s account – talk about annoying.
Same experience as Steve – no points at all in the last 5 days, and stingier after the first week. I reached 4250 since day one, but I had to answer a question and share on facebook (set to me only) to get that many.

The 300 point bonus worked for me and yes, the previous postings are right about the play and stay game. Nothing in the past week. But it worked great for topping off an account to reach the level of two free nights.
For those who haven’t stayed at a LaQuinta they usually fall somewhere in between a Comfort and a Hampton Inn. (Vary in quality).
One really nice thing about the Returns Club is you can book for points and cash (although its not advertised) at a very good rate. Say you have 6000 points, a room for 8,000 points is your 6,000 points and $15, $30 for an 11,000 tier room and $45 for a 15,000 tier room with 6,000 points. Can’t do it online, need to call
Customer Service. Also there upgrades they send you for reaching gold level, never expire. Customer service is excellent.
Worked for me, but only for my account. When I tried to repeat for my husband’s account, I got a message that an update had already been posted. Points posted immediately. I occasionally stay at LQ. They vary in quality–a lot based on the age of the property. New ones are great, but they get run down after a few years.
When my husband and I fly to RDU from FL on a specific trip to visit his mother who resides in a nursing home in Cary, we stay at a La Quinta near her locale. Our room is always spacious, very clean, with an oversized desk area, reasonable amenities, and friendly staff. At first we booked there because of its location/closeness to his mom. It’s basic and comfortable which fits our objective. As for the spin/play game: kind of a joke.
