American Express appears to be celebrating 40 years of its top consumer card (the top card you can actually apply for) by launching a number of targeted offers that can either save cardholders a little cash or help them to top up their Membership Rewards balances.
Based on what I’m seeing on card_name that I hold, these are the travel offers from this celebration (which, oddly, doesn’t appear to have been accompanied by much fanfare).
As you should be able to see, none of these offers is going to blow anyone away or draw anyone into making a new booking, but if you have plans to fly with Delta or JetBlue, plans for a Hilton stay or need to book a car through Hertz, the savings on offer may make the cost a little more palatable.
Needless to say, each targeted offer comes with its own terms and conditions (make sure to note that only bookings made through Amex Travel will trigger the Delta offer) and each seems to have a different end date, so if you hold card_name and you’re interested in using one or more of these offers, read the terms and conditions of each offer carefully to make sure that you don’t inadvertently somehow miss out on the savings.
As usual, most of these offers have a geographical limitation to them – the Hilton offer is restricted to the US and US territories, the Hertz offer is limited to Hertz corporate owned locations in the US, and the JetBlue offer is limited to flights originating in the US – but the Delta offer seems to be the exception here.
As far as I can see, the Delta credit will be triggered by any Delta marketed flights sold by Amex Travel (including flights purchased through the International Airline Program) and that makes this offer a lot more flexible than most other travel offers that we see Amex publish … it’s just a shame that the maximum rebate is just $40.
The last thing to note is that these offers appear to be limited to the consumer version of card_name and are not being extended to card_name, so if you only have the business card in your wallet, you’re going to be out of luck.
Bottom line
American Express appears to be ‘celebrating’ the 40th anniversary its consumer Platinum cards in an unusually subdued and understated way … at least so far.
Holders these cards are waking up to find a few modest offers targeted to their accounts in honor of the anniversary, but at the time of writing there doesn’t appear to be anything else going on. There hasn’t even been a press release to mark the occasion.
Perhaps this is just the beginning. Perhaps more is on the way. But as things stand, this feels like a very un-Amex like way to mark a significant anniversary for one of its best known cards.
