As of April 10, 2024, citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia will need to obtain a visa to enter Brazil, according to a recent announcement by the Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur). The new Brazil e-Visa requirement is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to streamline its visa process.
Previously, the requirement for entry visas in Brazil for ordinary passport holders from these countries was set to begin on January 10, 2024. However, Embratur has extended this deadline to April 10, 2024, to ensure a smooth transition to the e-Visa system and prevent any disruption of tourist flow during the high season. It’s important to note that if you already have a valid physical visa in your passport for the specific purpose of your visit, there is no need to apply for a new visa.
In a shift towards efficient processes, the e-Visa system aims to make travel to Brazil more convenient and accessible. The platform for obtaining the e-Visa, launched on December 6, allows applicants from the United States, Canada, and Australia to complete all the procedures online for USD 80.90 per person.
The electronic visa grants multiple entries and will be valid for the same duration as conventional visas:
- Canadians: 5-year period;
- Australians: 5-year period;
- Americans: 10-year period
Travellers arriving in Brazil by air, sea, or land must apply for the e-Visa. In light of the upcoming changes, those planning to arrive in Brazil on April 9 or later are strongly advised to apply for their e-Visa well in advance. This will help avoid potential travel disruptions due to delays or missed connections.
In other related news, Brazil has also reached a bilateral agreement with Japan. Since September 30, 2023, visa requirements have been waived for trips of up to 90 days between Brazil and Japan. This agreement is reciprocal, benefiting both Brazilian visitors to Japan and Japanese visitors to Brazil.
Planning a trip to Brazil before April 10, 2024, will save you some money as the new e-Visa requirements have been postponed until then. All trips thereon will need an approved e-Visa to enter Brazil.
