Review: TETRA Hotel, Autograph Collection

For our week in the Bay Area we needed to stay close to Mrs. ATX’s office in Sunnyvale. There aren’t many hotels in the area and the only options were an AC, TETRA Hotel Autograph Collection, Extended Stay America, and a Radisson. Since I’m in pursuit of Marriott Bonvoy Lifetime Platinum status, I quickly narrowed our options down to either the AC or the Autograph Collection hotel.

Booking

To book our hotel, I headed straight to Marriott.com. The hotel rates were astronomical for our dates, especially considering the area is basically the middle of nowhere. The AC Hotel was roughly $315 a night and the TETRA Hotel, Autograph Collection was around $350. With so many offices in the area, it’s clear that both hotels cater primarily business travelers.

Location

The TETRA Hotel Autograph Collection is located on Java Drive in the Moffett Park development. The area is surrounded by offices for tech companies as well as a large Lockheed Martin facility. Moffett Field is located just to the west.

The Valley Transportation Authority light rail Orange Line runs directly in front of the hotel and provides access to Mountain View and San Jose. The service is infrequent and we found it easier to utilize Uber/rental cars for our stay.

Lobby & Check-In

We arrived at the hotel on a Sunday Evening and pulled into the circular drive drive in front to unload our bags

Stepping inside, we were greeted by a large, open lobby. The interior featured a combination of exposed concrete and art installations hanging from the ceiling.

There were a variety of seating areas in the lobby and it was a hub of activity during our stay. During the day I saw many people working from the lobby. At night, it was full of people enjoying drinks from the hotel bar.

While I also worked from the lobby most of the day, loud music begins playing at 7:00a which makes it hard to take calls. Plan on taking those from your room if you’re working from the hotel.

To the left upon entering you’ll find the reception desk. It was slightly obscured by a large pole and not marked.

Since we arrived late in the evening our room was already ready. The front desk clerk quickly verified our information and issued our room keys.

Room

We were assigned Room 707, a standard king room on the 7th floor towards the end of the hallway. The hallway was monochrome with the floor, walls, and ceiling all matching.

Bedroom

Upon entering the room, the bathroom was to the left, a set of floor to ceiling cabinets were on the right, and the main portion of the room was straight ahead.

The room was slightly smaller than average but it was well appointed and felt bright and modern.

The bed was comfortable and was flanked by two floating nightstands. Low level, motion activated lights were located along the bed next to the floor. These were great for getting in and out of the bed without disturbing Mrs. ATX. I worked east coast hours during this trip which made for some early mornings.

Lamps were located above both nightstands and a phone, pencil, and paper were waiting on the one closest to the window.

Across from the bed was a marble counter that also doubled as a desk. A large, flat screen TV was mounted above the desk.

Sitting on the side of the counter was a hot water kettle, cups, glasses, water pitcher, and ice bucket. Instead of a coffee maker, instant coffee packets were provided and you needed to heat water using the kettle.

Underneath were some storage drawers, one of which housed a hidden refrigerator drawer with a couple bottles of water.

Against the window there was a couch/chaise lounge that had a small table. We didn’t use this during our visit aside from luggage storage.

The view from our room was decent and looked out over some office buildings with Moffat Field, San Francisco Bay, and mountains in the distance. While it appears to be a balcony, there is no way to access the exterior area from the room.

Bathroom

The bathroom was separated from the bedroom by a translucent wall which made the space not entirely private.

A Dyson hairdryer was on the counter which Mrs. ATX appreciated. MiN New York branded toiletries were also waiting on the counter along with a price list should you want to take any of the items in the room home with you.

In the storage closets closes to the door, there were bathrobes, slippers, a steamer, ironing board and hangars available.

Food and Beverage

The TETRA Hotel, Autograph Collection has food and beverage options onsite. Adrestia is the hotel’s full service dining option. Coffee Manufactory serves coffee, pastries, and has a small market. The in-room instant coffee is also provided by them. Finally, Nokori is the hotel bar and specializes in Japanese whiskey.

Adrestia Restaurant

Thanks to my Marriott Titanium status, breakfast was included during our stay and I ate at Adrestia a couple of times. The restaurant was small and separated from the lobby by a series of dividers.

The complimentary breakfast options were either the continental breakfast, or fundamental breakfast. Everything else was an additional charge.

I had the fundamental breakfast which was very good and filling.

Coffee Manufactory

Coffee Manufactory is open from 6:00a to 6:00p daily and sells a variety of coffees, pastries, and snacks. I used my breakfast credit here a couple of days when I didn’t want to have a full, sit down meal.

Nokori Japanese Whiskey Bar

The hotel bar, Nokori, was the largest of the food and beverage spaces at the hotel. The bar area and lobby space were somewhat interchangeable which was good during the evenings as the hotel was packed.

Though the bar specialized in Japanese whiskey, they have a wide variety of wines, beers, and spirits.

Pool and Fitness Center

The pool and fitness center is located on the 4th floor. The pool area is shared between the TETRA Hotel and the attached AC Hotel. Each hotel had a separate fitness center for guests of their respective hotels.

Pool Deck

The pool deck was spacious and was split into two areas. To the left are a few seating areas and a fire pit. I didn’t see anyone using this space during our stay but it seemed like a nice place for hanging out away from the hustle and bustle of the lobby.

At night, the hotel had the fire pit going and the weather was quite nice.

Opposite of the seating area was the pool. It was a decent size and was surrounded by rows of lounge chairs. The fitness centers of both hotels directly overlooked the pool so you better not mind people watching you swim.

Fitness Center

The fitness center is located at the corner of the building closest to the pool. The space was small but felt spacious thanks to the two walls of floor to ceiling windows.

Summary

The TETRA Hotel, Autograph Collection by Marriott is a fantastic hotel in an odd area. The hotel caters almost exclusively to business travelers at the nearby technology and aerospace companies. While the rooms are small, the common areas are well thought out and enjoyable to spend time in.

The hotel is still very new and the entire property felt fresh, modern, and clean. Should work take us back out to Sunnyvale I’d happily stay at this hotel again though I wouldn’t seek it out if coming to the area for anything other than work.
