Via Gulf Business, it appears as if Etihad will launch A380 service to Australia in late 2014:

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways has announced a major revamp of its Australian operations including new aircraft, new routes, additional flights and new airport facilities.

As part of the overhaul, the airline plans to introduce the jumbo Airbus A380 aircraft on its Sydney and Melbourne routes and launch nonstop flights between Perth and Abu Dhabi.

The market between Australia and the UAE sure is heating up, between the Emirates/Qantas alliance and the Etihad/Virgin Australia alliance.

Very curious to see what Etihad’s A380s look like when they’re unveiled — it wouldn’t surprise me if they give Emirates a run for their money.

Awesome. Being able to use AA miles for what will surely be a spectacular A380 first class experience will change the game for getting to Oz on miles.

@Josh, of course not thanks to AA’s asinine routing rules which doesn’t allow transit through a second region…

@Roland – Not just AA. No airline has let me route to Australia via Europe and Asia (unless you get very lucky at US Airways, though even there they baulk…) But I’ll pay the extra miles to hop to Europe in coach in order to experience First on an Etihad A380 for 22 hours.

I believe the same routing rules will stop you from using your AA miles on Etihad for Europe to Australia. When trying to book earlier this year the only way it could be booked is by using 2 awards.
All Partner awards to Australia from Europe have to transit in either Asia 1 or Asia 2 zones, the Middle East / India require 2 awards.
