Captivating Captiva Island, Florida – South Seas Plantation Review Part I - Points Miles and Martinis


We recently had a big family vacation to Captiva, FL and decided to go to South Seas Island Resort. Mrs. Weekly Flyer searched on VRBO for a unit for our family to rent for the week and after a lot of debate decided on a unit that was privately owned at the Land’s End units within South Seas. You can also book through tthe resort but, we found private ownership to be more cost effective.

Trip Report

Booking

It was pretty easy dealing with the owner who sent the contract (1 page) and asked for a deposit of 50% of total at booking and 50% 30 days prior to arrival. Upon full payment, the owner emailed us a code to enter the condo and gave us directions on how to get into the resort.  VRBO does offer a rental guarantee that is worth considering depending on the circumstances of your rental. But, we have rented many properties through VRBO with no issues so far. I always try to talk to the owner/property manager on the phone directly to make sure that the rental is legitimate.

Land’s End unit

The Land’s End units are at the very north end of the resort and the island for that matter. I mentioned how great the Redfish Pass is for fishing, and we were literally right on the Pass. Our unit was directly on the Redfish Pass which is well known for nature, wildlife and fishing.

Parking is underneath the unit and there are two stories above the parking level. Our unit was two bedrooms, two bathrooms and pretty spacious with a tremendous view from most rooms. The deck facing the water was large and opened to both the living and the master bedroom and we spent a lot of time sitting out there at the patio table.

It was so close to the water, literally a shells throw away.

The furnishings were nice; comparable to that of a nice hotel. The unit did show some wear but, it was as to be expected for a beach condo.

The master bedroom had a small hallway before getting to the bathroom and bedroom.

The master bathroom had skylights that gave great natural light during the day.

The Master bedroom looked directly towards the Ocean.

There was a second bedroom for Baby Weekly Flyer.

Amenities of the condo

Amenities of the condo included a gorgeous view and fantastic location (walking to beach, pool, tennis and golf.) Updated full kitchen, dining room, washer and dryer, dining room that seated 6-8 people comfortably and sunroom.

Essentially, the condo was like a hotel suite with one of the best views available. The difference between it and a hotel was that you didn’t have room service, housekeeping or a front desk to help with your every immediate need. Also there were no points to be earned, except for the credit card that I put the cost of the rental on.

Provisions

We stopped at a grocery store just before we went over the bridge to Sanibel and Captiva Island. We were glad that we did! Prices on Captiva Island both at the resort and just outside of it for groceries were at least double normal prices. For example, a small pack of Ritz crackers for $7.00!

Bottom Line

Our stay was very relaxing. We fished, golfed, went to the beach and pools and spent quality time with the family. In Part II and III, I will outline the resort as a whole more in detail and our restaurant choices.
