Review: United Polaris Lounge – Washington Dulles International (IAD)

by Adam Stuart | March 23, 2025 | 1 Comment

Maybe my favorite Polaris Lounge…Luxurious design, lots of amenities and great service. When: March 10, 2025. Rating: 9.5/10 – Supreme. Access: Arriving on United Polaris from Zurich.

Well, this might be my favorite United Polaris Lounge. It’s an amazing space. The décor seems a bit more refined than its counterparts, with definite nods to DC. This lounge has all the hallmarks we have come to expect in a Polaris lounge: huge complimentary bar with inventive cocktails and nice wines, expansive buffet, restaurant a la carte dining room, very nice shower suites, a wide variety of seating, great staff, private phone booth/offices, etc.

The entrance is by gate C17 at Dulles. The transition from the unbelievably drab concourse to this lounge cannot be understated. There is an interesting light sculpture by reception. After presenting your credentials, you must go the right and ascend a short flight of stairs (or elevator) and you enter the lounge. I was immediately struck by the painting of the US Capital building.

To the right and all the way to the windowed back wall is the variety of seating visitors to these lounges expect. Comfortable wide chairs, sofas, egg style chairs facing each other, and the ever-popular single pods with desks and coat hooks (I was lucky to snag one late in the afternoon). To the left is the main part of the lounge with more seating, including many tables that are ideal for work or eating. In addition, there are three very large phone booth/offices – which of course were occupied. Suffice to say, this lounge gets very crowded late afternoon – before the European departures early evening. But the lounge did quickly get quiet before a bank of departures.

Further to the left is the bar. The bar, like other Polaris bars, is illuminated from below and has an extensive menu, which includes some drinks specific to DC. The bar itself feels more elegantly appointed than other Polaris bars. There is attractive seating in the area in front of the bar.

To the right of the bar is an incredibly extensive buffet. Here is some of what I saw during the late afternoon: wraps, salad fixings, a beef dish, chicken, salmon, cooked vegetables, charcuterie, breads, and delicious sweets. This area also has the coffee and soft drink offerings. There is another candy and soft drink station nearer where people enter – on the seating area to the right.

To the left of the bar is maybe the nicest room I have seen in a Polaris lounge – a room that invokes a DC library. This room like the rest of the lounge has a variety of seating and is a great place to spend some time.

To the left and sort of behind the bar is the sit-down dining room. Since I ordered chicken for my flight, I thought the Polaris burger would be a good choice – and it was cooked to perfection. However, I was sorely tempted by the chicken and sausage gumbo. Remember portions in the dining room are NOT large – so it may be wise to order more than one item. I was able to order for desert some raspberry sorbet – and that was NOT on the menu. Kudos to the server – who let me order off the menu!

Further to the left of the dining area are the shower suites. They are exactly like the other Polaris showers. They are very well appointed. Helpful staff will escort you to a shower and ask if you need anything (like a dryer and slippers). These are not the showers in the Singapore Private Room at Changhi airport – but seriously – no one expects that. Restrooms are individual rooms – which are perfect if you feel like changing clothes before your next flight. However, there was a line to use them (not long) late afternoon. It got quiet by 6 PM.

I rate this lounge 9.5/10. Best features: The dining room, bar, décor, buffet, the staff, and the shower suites. Flaws: Crowds – finding a seat in the late afternoon before the flights to Europe depart can be a challenge.
