Cruise ships may feel like a floating hotel, but unlike a hotel on land, they move—and they don’t wait for you.

One woman says she and her friends learned that the hard way during a cruise to the Bahamas.

In a video that has garnered over 7.9 million views, TikToker Kam (@kamryyyn) shows what happens if you miss that deadline.

“If anyone was wondering what it’s like to be left behind by your cruise ship,” she writes in the video’s text overlay.

What Happens When You Miss The Cruise Ship?

The video shows Kam and her group on a boat while a water police boat can be seen close by.

“Getting pulled over right next to our ship as they do last call,” she writes in an on-screen caption.

Moments later, the ship is visibly farther away. “POV: ship leaving with all of our stuff and passports,” she explains via text overlay. She adds that they were in Nassau, Bahamas.

From there, a logistical scramble ensues. “After lots of crying, this nice man decided to help us out,” Kam says, then cutting to a clip of the group riding to a different location.

The next update shows a Holiday Inn Express booking document. “Spending $400 on a hotel for the night,” she writes.

She also shares that they slept in their bathing suits and skipped dinner, as a form of self “punishment.” “No charger no toothbrush just vibes,” she adds.

The next day, they began their journey home. Kam shows the group taking passport photos, then them showing up “7am sharp” in front of the U.S. embassy.

They finally got their new passports “$165 later.”

From there, they booked a one-way flight home, which she said cost $300, and made it back safely.

“Totally optional btw,” she writes jokingly in the caption.

Commenters React

In the comments, some viewers pointed out that cruise departure times are clearly communicated, while others wondered why they didn’t pick any other options to handle the situation.

“Should’ve just flown to the cruises’ next stop and got back on,” one user wrote.

“Please tell me this was like at least day 4 or something,” another hoped.

In comments, Kam explained that the cruise ended the next day.

Not everyone was compassionate, though.

“Left behind?” a third asked. “So you missed the very explicit time they tell you to be back on the ship so this doesn’t happen?”

“I always head back to the ship with at least 2 hours to spare,” chimed in a fourth commenter.

Are Ships Allowed To Leave Without All Guests Aboard?

If a guest does not return or arrive on time, cruise ships absolutely can—and do—leave without them.

According to Travel + Leisure, “pier runners,” or passengers rushing to make last call, are often those who book excursions through third parties. Whether those passengers make it back in time can depend on how their excursion is scheduled and whether it aligns with the ship’s departure.

However, the magazine notes that it’s still relatively rare for passengers to actually miss their ship. There is usually a one to two-hour window between the final boarding time and when the ship actually departs.

In this case, the group was pulled over by the water police, which likely caused them to miss the last call.
