田舎から都会の物価に慣れるのは時間がかかる
バックグラウンド 私が社会人をスタートさせたのはネブラスカ州です。当ブログはネブラスカに住んでいる時に始めました。 今はテキサス州オースティン在住で、ここ数年はモルディブやボラボラのような旅行先の物価を経験しているのでやっとですが都会/高級リゾート観光地の物価にようやく慣れてきた感じがします。 この記事では田舎者が都会の物価に慣れるまでの長い道のりを振り返ってみたいと思います。 ネブラスカ 初めて自分の仕事を持ち収入を得ることができて大人になったんだな～と感じた瞬間と共に生活をするには結構お金がかかるんだなーとも感じました。 学生時代にコツコツ貯めていたお小遣い5,000ドルほど握りしめてネブラスカに就職＆引っ越ししたのですが、家賃こそ当時450ドルぐらいで安かったですが車が必要で車の購入、保険、ガソリンで収入があったにも関わらず貯金5,000ドルは口座からなくなっていました。 日系企業で2年働いた後、大学院に行きました。大学院では研究する代わりに学校が授業料と生活費を支給してくれました。年間22,000ドルでした。妻は社会人だったので世帯収入はもっとありましたが、それでも田舎の給料で日系企業だったので少なめです。 当時は個人経営のレストランだと1人10ドル以下で食べれるぐらいの物価でした。我々夫婦の中では外食＝1人10ドルあれば大丈夫！という認識がオマハに引っ越すまでの約9年間の印象でした。 私は大学院を卒業し再度社会人になりました。特殊な分野で就職先が2つぐらいしかネブラスカにはありませんでした。経験ゼロで入ったので給料も日系で働いていた時よりは良かったですがそれでも業界としてはかなり少ない金額でした。 学生をしていたLincolnよりOmahaの方が物価は若干ですが高かった印象です。Omahaの方に引っ越してからはレストランでの外食が1人10-13ドルぐらいになってました。 「ま、自分はもう学生じゃないしOmahaなので10ドル超えるのは仕方ない」 という感じに受け取っていました。 ハワイ旅行 ネブラスカに住んでいる時に4回ほどハワイに行きました。ハワイだから物価が高いことは知っていたけど、いわゆるB級グルメみたいなのを食べ歩きました。楽しかったし美味しかったです。 お値段は当時1人15ドルぐらいだったと思います。これぐらいなら1年に1回ぐらいのハワイ旅行でもネブラスカの給料で十分支払えます（ホテルと飛行機はマイル＆ポイント使ったからですが） 特にオアフ島は調べれば美味しく安く食べれるレストランも当時は多かったです。 LAオフ会 2019年にLAで私にとって初めて大規模のオフ会を開催しました。Alexさんに手伝ってもらって会場を決めました。そしてトモさんが帰りはホテルまで送ってくれました（今でもこの2人とはSNS, コミュニティ以外でも交流があります） ランチにオフ会をしたのですが、せっかくなら食事も美味しめの所にしよう！そう思って決めたのですが、お値段は35ドルでした。1食=10ドル前後という田舎Priceに慣れていた私にとっては正直目が飛び出るぐらいのお値段でした（結局色々食事が出てきて美味しいし値段に納得できました） ランチに35ドル（日本で食べる寿司は例外）を使ったことは今考えると社会人になってからあまりなかったと思います。そもそもの理由はネブラスカにそのようなレストランは少ないこと。そして自分の収入がランチに35ドル支払えるほど余裕がなかったからだと思います。 オースティン テキサスは大きくて安い！ そう聞いてテキサスに転職しました。この転職でやっと自分のタイトルの平均収入ぐらいもらえるようになり生活に少しは余裕が出るだろうと思っていましたが考えが少し甘かったです。 オースティンは大都会ではないけどネブラスカに比べるとかなり都会。そしてレストランの物価も高い。特にコロナ以降は異常な値上がりです。 そんなに高くないレストランでも2024年現在だと1人分がギリギリ20ドルいかないぐらいです。チップ入れたら20ドル超えます。そしてオースティンのレストランはBBQ以外はレベルが高くありません。 「え？このレベルの食事が何で20ドルするの？」というのはオースティンにたくさんあります。 ボラボラ＆モルディブ 我が家は過去にボラボラに2回（インターコンチとコンラッド）、モルディブに3回（コンラッド、Alilaに2回）行きました。 ボラボラの方が若干モルディブよりも物価は安いですが、ホテルのレストランはドリンクが20ドルぐらい、ディナーのメインコースは40-60ドルぐらいです。 海に浮かぶ島にあるホテルなので高いのは当たり前です。不思議とこのような旅行を繰り返していると徐々にですが物価に慣れていきます。 オースティンの20ドルする食事でも仕方ないかーと思えるようになってきました。美味しいなら20-40ドルでもいいけど、あまり美味しくないのに20ドルは悪！という考えは収入が上がった今でも同じです。その理由からオースティンでの外食はBBQしか食べません。 マイル＆ポイント レストランの値段に慣れるのにどうマイル＆ポイントが関係あるんだ？と思っている方も多いかと思います。説明します。 私がマイル＆ポイントを始めた頃（2011年前後）はアメリカ⇔日本のビジネスクラス往復は90,000マイルでした。 今はそんなことはできませんよね。マイル＆ポイントもインフレしております。値段が高くなってきているのです。この記事で書いたようになかなか人って物価の高騰に慣れない。マイル＆ポイントも似てると思います。 幸いなことに給料とは違ってマイル＆ポイントは毎年稼ぎやすくなっています。そのお蔭で昔より必要ポイント数が多く必要だったとしても支払いができます。確かに昔よりは多くポイントが必要だけど、入会ボーナスでもらえるポイント数も上がったので、そこを考慮すると昔と大差はない。 マイル＆ポイントに関しては昔から使い方があまり変わっておりません。高級ホテルに泊まる頻度が増えた関係でホテルポイントが多く必要とはなりましたが、長距離路線で空きがあれば迷わずビジネスクラスを予約します。 まとめ ネブラスカで社会人としてスタートしたから高い物価に慣れるのに非常に時間がかかったんじゃないか？と思います。もし逆に物価の高いNY、ボストン、カリフォルニアから物価の安い中西部に引っ越してたらそんなことは一切感じなかったのかもしれません。 ネブラスカでの生活は後悔はしていませんが、物価に対する感覚だけで判断すると、社会人になるなら都会で給料がいいけど物価が高いエリアで就職して、落ち着きたいと思ったら田舎に引っ越すのがスムーズに行くんだろうなーと思います。 一度田舎の物価に慣れると、大都市に引っ越した時にどんなに給料が上がっても慣れた物価と大都会の物価の差に無意味に悩まされることになるかもしれません。 給料、物価は大切ですが、限りある人生その他にも大切なことが色々ある気がします。その大切なことに考える時間を費やす方が効率的です。
