Man Flies From Atlanta To San Francisco. Then He Realizes His Delta Flight Is One Of The New A321neos

A man took an opportunity to fly on one of Delta’s new A321neos after seeing it was available for a flight from Atlanta to San Francisco leg. Then he posted his review of the experience.
Eric Pedersen, who goes by Regional Jet Regular on TikTok (@embraeric), took the flight to review the Airbus A321neo. The content creator generally praised his travel experience. He told his audience that it offered the “same great service, more upgrade opportunities!”
But viewers were split down the middle as to whether they wanted to take a trip in first class on the aircraft.
What is the Airbus A321neo?
The Airbus A321neo is a popular, fuel efficient plane that has “the longest-fuselage of any A320 family aircraft,” according to Airbus. It seats between 180 to 244 passengers.
The aircraft isn’t technically new. By Dec. 31, Delta had “87 A321neos in service” and had committed to purchasing 102 additional planes. When the plane was introduced, it was considered a premium aircraft by Delta customers.
Each Airbus A321neo aircraft typically has 20 Delta First seats, 60 Delta Comfort seats, and 114 Delta Main seats, according to the carrier’s website. The planes have in-seat power outlets, USBs and WiFi, similar to other planes in Delta’s lineup.
According to Pedersen, some Airbus A321neos are getting Delta One seats in the near future. His flight had 44 first class seats, which the content creator said would be partly replaced with some Delta One seating options.
“I use Delta One most often flying from JFK to LAX. Generally, I work in NJ early in the week and then fly to LA in the evening,” the content creator told BoardingArea. “This allows me to get some dinner, do a little work, and sleep for a few hours before I land at midnight PST. After a few more hours of sleep at my hotel, I start my time in LA refreshed thanks to the extra sleep I caught on the plane. Delta has done their research and knows that people like myself are willing to pay a premium for the extra room and rest during these flights whether that ticket is paid out of pocket or out of corporate travel budget.”
The Points Guy gave a review of first class on the A321neo and listed both pros and cons for the experience, although Kyle Olsen, the reviewer, generally praised the company’s offerings. The aircraft itself “has generously sized overhead bins.” Upon arriving, Olsen noticed a handwritten note on his seat. He noted other hospitable quirks despite the aircraft not offering typical amenities found with other carriers.
Delta Air Lines didn’t respond to an inquiry sent via online contact form.
How did Pedersen review the aircraft?
Pedersen paid $268 for a seat upgrade. He selected a Shake Shack burger for his meal and then gave commenters his thoughts regarding the experience.
“ Service was like any other first class plane I’ve been on with Delta,” Pedersen said. “You didn’t get to pick your pre-departure beverage. You got a choice of a mimosa or a champagne. There is an extra flight attendant on board to help with meal service and drinks.”
Despite those notes, Pedersen said the price of admission was worth the upgrade.
In a comment to BoardingArea, he added, “I have flown in Delta’s newest first class seats many times. I love the new seat design and the privacy that they provide over the older traditional seats. There are lots of storage cubbies that are convenient for your laptop and snacks. The window seat can be a little difficult to get out of if the chair in front of you is reclined. Others have mentioned that the seats are too hard, but in my experience the cushion has been adequate at 6’1”, 200lbs. The new seats are great and I prefer them to the older seats, but the service is the same across the fleet in domestic first class travel.”
“It looks like business class”
Some viewers expressed concerns over what the Airbus A321’s first class seats offer.
“I don’t feel like those look like first class seats,” one person wrote. “Are they soft? From the video it looks like business class. The arm rest looks hard too? If I got on the plane that would not be what I was expecting at all as first class.”
“So basically it’s going back to how it was 20 years ago with normal seats and leg room, only we are paying waaaaay more and they’re calling it ‘first class,’” one viewer said.
Others, however, praised the first class amenities. “Definitely doing this going forward. Love the extra leg room,” another said.
For Pedersen, he clarified his first priority is flight time. In that regard, Delta fits his needs. “I need something that fits my busy schedule so the equipment is a secondary priority,” he said. “I will add that I have booked some trips based on a new experience, such as the 44 seat first class A321neo I discussed in my recent video, or flying on an A350 vs an older 763.”
