Review: Lufthansa Lounge – Detroit International (DTW) – Evans Terminal
Dated but decent – only option for Star Alliance travelers
The summary
The lounge is near gate D7 in the Evans terminal at DTW Airport. The terminal serves airlines other than Delta and its partners (which are based out of the McNamara terminal). The Lufthansa lounge admits Star Alliance Gold passengers, United Club members, and Priority Pass members., The lounge sports the previous utilitarian iteration of Lufthansa lounges and does not compare with the more expansive lounge in Boston or the Allegris designed lounge in Newark (let alone the multiple lounges at JFK). I looked forward to the reopening of the dual-level lounge at Dulles.
Entry to the lounge is clearly marked. Given the end-of-September date, the entry sported some fun Oktoberfest murals.

The lounge is mainly two equally-sized rooms. A room with food on the right past reception and a room with drinks on the left. There is ample seating in both rooms. Starting with the food room, I was lucky enough to be there late in the morning, so I got to look at both breakfast and lunch options. Oddly, the soft drink refrigerator was also in this room (other drinks are in the room to the left).
For breakfast, the lounge offered: fruits, vegetables, cheeses, breads, french toast, mini-omelets, and sausage. The staff was not finished putting out all the lunch items around 11/11:30. Lunch included (when I was there) salad fixings, two hot dishes, and hummus. One thing that was sadly absent was soft pretzels with mustard. I have seen (and eaten) that in Boston, Newark, and Washington.

The décor in the room with the buffet is very utilitarian. There was a hi-top counter along the windows, which allow light to flood the room and provide views of the tarmac. Outlets were readily available throughout this room (and the entire lounge), and internet access was seamless. The room has a large wood communal table and plenty of round dining tables. I liked the nice furniture/shelving unit along one wall and the vintage automobile photographs – a homage to Detroit.

The beverage room on the left past reception has an open bar that appeared very well stocked. There was an espresso/coffee machine and a refrigerator with a selection of beers.

I found this room to be more richly furnished, with comfortable lounge chairs and sofas. There were also a few round tables. Once again, I saw plenty of outlets.

I really liked the staff in this lounge, especially the agent at reception. There were small washrooms in the back of each room. Although the rather spartan design is dated – by Lufthansa standards – this is a fine place to get some work done and have a light meal before a flight.
