A woman and her son got upgraded to first class, only to realize that they wouldn’t be sitting next to one another. So she asked people seated near them if they’d be willing to trade. One passenger’s response caught her way off guard.

Kimberly Horn (@kimberlyhairhorn) recently shared her story on TikTok. She says one man was more than happy to switch, but he was in the same situation as her. So they decided to work in tandem to ensure both could sit next to their loved ones.

Then Horn asked another man to trade. He immediately refused.

“ I said, ‘excuse me sir. We have a deal to make with you,’” Horn recalled. “He immediately said, ‘I am not switching seats.’ And then gets so mad, turns around and sits down in his chair and then starts mumbling about kids with phones.”

In the end, Horn was able to sit next to her son. But the man’s behavior stuck with her.

Horn took her story to the web, possibly expecting sympathy. “This man came in HOT … for absolutely no reason,” she wrote in on-screen text on her post. “How angry must you be to act like this,” she added.

Many commenters took his side, however. Turns out people aren’t too happy with seat swappers.

The post has 57,000 views as of this writing.

Is Seat Swapping Taboo?

Viewers weren’t too happy about Horn’s seat swapping shenanigans, which one dubbed “weird seat roulette.”

Another said, “Let’s normalize NOT ASKING PEOPLE TO SWITCH.”

Commenters pointed out that Horn and her son were still relatively close to each other on the flight. She said they were on the same row, albeit opposite sides, which meant she could at least keep an eye on him. While not ideal, viewers felt she didn’t really “need” to sit next to her son. She just wanted to.

One said, “What is everyone’s obsession with sitting immediately beside your family member? Will you both not arrive at the same place at the same time regardless of where you’re sitting? I wouldn’t care if my husband was 10 rows ahead of me. I’m pretty sure we can go a few hours without speaking and be OK.”

Switching seats on planes is somewhat taboo. Some people are particular about where they sit and book well in advance to ensure they get the seat they want. And many feel it’s needy to ask someone else to accommodate you for no other reason than you’d like to sit next to your travel companion.

It also makes people feel awkward to refuse such a request, as if it’s rude to say no to doing a stranger a favor.

If you really must sit with someone, many feel that it’s your responsibility to book far enough ahead to make sure that you can. If sitting with her son was that important, Horn could arguably have declined the upgrade to first class and kept their original seats.

Some were frustrated with Horn on behalf of the man who refused to switch seats.

“Shaming someone for not accommodating your unplanned seating change is wild,” said one.

“If the gentleman travels a lot, he’s probably just tired of having this request all the time. Why can’t everybody just stay in their own seat?” another wrote.

Horn didn’t respond to a direct message sent via TikTok.

  1. If your worst-case scenario is being upgraded, then I weep for the future. And another man was in the same situation …. really? Somehow he could have switched and see if he could get another passenger to switch later on – but two people are asking. How it is a surprise if a person (that was probably already asked) was a little short because they already answered the question.
