Exploring the New 26,000 sq ft Amex Centurion Lounge at ATL

by Sky Skylar | March 3, 2025 | 3 Comments

Ever since it officially opened in early 2024, I’ve been hearing so much buzz about the largest American Express Centurion Lounge located in Concourse E of Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. So in 2025, with some time to spare between flights, I finally ventured inside to see if it truly lived up to the hype. The lounge spans nearly 26,000 square feet, operating from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and I quickly realized it was more than just size that set it apart. From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt an elevated pre-flight experience that beckoned me to slow down, relax, and explore every corner of this sprawling space.

A Record-Breaking Space

A Record-Breaking Space

As soon as I stepped in, I was greeted by a 50-year-old olive tree surrounded by custom light sculptures that immediately gave the lounge a fresh, modern vibe. I’ve visited quite a few Centurion Lounges in my time—like the 15,000-square-foot one at JFK—but this spacious Atlanta outpost truly raises the bar. The abundance of indoor seating areas and multiple outdoor terraces ensured I never felt cramped, even during peak hours.

According to 2024 statistics from the Airports Council International, Hartsfield-Jackson welcomed over 93 million passengers last year, making lounge capacity a critical factor for frequent travelers. In my experience, comfort is everything when navigating a busy hub, and this lounge nails it. Bright greenery and well-placed lighting also made the environment surprisingly welcoming, almost like stepping into a stylish living room rather than a typical airport lounge.

I also appreciated the functional design, from dedicated phone booths for private calls to cozy workstations outfitted with charging ports. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, it’s easy to set up your laptop, catch up on emails, or simply decompress with a good book. It’s clear the designers paid close attention to both form and function, making every seat feel like the best seat in the house.

Southern-Inspired Cuisine

Southern-Inspired Cuisine

One of the biggest highlights for me was the impressive buffet curated by Chef Deborah VanTrece, who infused local flavors into every dish. I’ve strolled through quite a few airport lounges where the food can feel like an afterthought, but here, each plate was thoughtfully crafted. In the morning, you might find cheddar grits paired with fresh biscuits, and by evening, savory braised meats with a side of roasted seasonal vegetables.

What truly stood out was the lounge’s dedication to rotating its menu to reflect the region’s dynamic culinary scene. A recent study from the National Restaurant Association noted that Southern-inspired dishes remain among the top three emerging trends in U.S. airport dining. I can see why: there’s something comforting about being able to sample Atlanta’s soul food traditions even while you’re in transit. Plus, the curated wine list added an extra layer of sophistication, helping me wind down after a hectic travel day.

If you’re more adventurous, international twists often appear on the menu, offering a delicious fusion of global tastes and local flair. I recall savoring a sweet-and-spicy curry that complemented a classic Southern cornbread in a way I’d never experienced before. It’s the kind of culinary discovery that can turn a mundane layover into a memorable part of the journey.

The Reserve Whiskey Bar

The Reserve Whiskey Bar

The Reserve whiskey bar ended up being my favorite spot to unwind before boarding. I’ve seen quite a few lounge bars in my travels, but the selection here is truly a cut above. From top-shelf bourbons to hard-to-find whiskeys, it caters to connoisseurs and casual sippers alike. The bartenders seemed genuinely enthusiastic about discussing different flavor profiles and suggesting personalized cocktail options based on my preferences.

I loved the seating arrangement around the bar, which felt a bit like a cozy, upscale speakeasy right in the heart of the airport. According to industry data from the Distilled Spirits Council, premium whiskey consumption continues to rise in the U.S., and this lounge smartly taps into that trend. It’s more than just a place to grab a quick drink; it’s an experience that can elevate a long layover into something enjoyable.

My go-to order was a classic Old Fashioned made with a small-batch bourbon, though I also tried a whiskey flight to expand my palate. If you’re not a whiskey fan, don’t worry. The Reserve also offers a variety of other premium spirits, wines, and local craft beers. Regardless of your choice, it’s a perfect excuse to pause, relax, and soak in the lounge’s welcoming ambiance.

Access Requirements

Access Requirements

If you’re looking to enter, you’ll need a qualifying American Express Card—Platinum, Business Platinum, or Centurion—or a Delta SkyMiles Reserve card. Make sure you have your same-day boarding pass and a government-issued photo ID ready, too. I’ve seen a few folks turned away simply because they forgot one of these key items, so double-check before you arrive.

Under the current policy, you can typically enter up to three hours before your departing flight or during a layover. However, I’ve personally noticed that enforcement can vary depending on the time of day and the crowd levels. During peak periods—often early mornings and late afternoons—this lounge can fill up quickly, so planning your visit off-peak might enhance your overall experience.

Keep in mind that guest fees may apply unless you meet certain spending thresholds on your eligible card. According to a 2024 survey by J.D. Power, nearly 70% of travelers say they’d pay for a premium lounge pass if it significantly improved their airport experience. Still, it’s always wise to review your card’s terms to see if you can access the lounge and bring guests without incurring extra costs.

Pro Tips and Takeaways

Pro Tips and Takeaways

In my experience, high-speed Wi-Fi and well-appointed shower suites can be absolute lifesavers, especially if you’re dashing from one flight to another. The showers here are stocked with plush towels and quality amenities, which can make a world of difference in helping you feel refreshed.

If you’re planning to get work done, try snagging a seat in one of the quieter corners, away from the main buffet area. I’ve found it easiest to concentrate when I’m tucked into a cozy nook with a reliable power outlet. Plus, the lounge’s design includes plenty of charging stations, so you won’t have to fight for a spot to plug in.

Overall, it’s a premium experience that raises the bar for airport lounges. Even if you’re not a frequent traveler, this Centurion Lounge is worth a visit during a layover or before a long flight. It encapsulates everything from local culture to global sophistication, all under one stylish roof.

Final Thoughts

Final Thoughts

After spending considerable time here, I can confidently say this lounge redefines what it means to travel comfortably. From the moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in sleek design, thoughtful amenities, and top-notch service. Whether you’re sipping on a craft cocktail at The Reserve or sampling the rotating menu of Southern-inspired dishes, there’s a sense of refinement that goes beyond the usual airport routine.

In my opinion, the best aspect is how it captures Atlanta’s unmistakable charm while still catering to a diverse range of travelers. It’s not just about having a modern space or fancy decor—it’s about the details that make every moment easy and relaxing. With multiple seating options, dedicated workspaces, and a culinary program that keeps surprising me with new flavors, I see it as both a respite and a celebration of travel’s possibilities.

Sky Skylar’s Take

While I’ve never actually flown the millions of miles that inspire my blogging, I’ve devoured enough travel stories to know comfort when I see it. This lounge is the embodiment of forward-thinking design blended with local flair, an environment that can make any layover feel like a mini getaway of its own.

Going beyond the basics is what impresses me most. It’s the thoughtful curation of flavors, the high level of service, and the nod to Atlanta’s legacy all wrapped into one cohesive space. If this is what the future of airport lounges looks like, I can’t wait to see what surprises come next.

  1. This reads like a paid ad by Amex and certainly doesn’t jibe with the less-than-4-star rating on Google. You left out any mention of all its repeated health code violations, including a failing grade. Not a single negative thing to share?

  2. The lounge is awful. I’m a Centurion card holder and it irritates me at how crowded the lounges are without provided reserved seating for true Centurion cardholders. Plus the food has gone downhill and they don’t offer a special Centurion cardholder menu like some other lounges

  3. “this lounge can fill up quickly, so planning your visit off-peak might enhance your overall experience.”

Most lounges suck anymore but yeah thanks!? FFS I’m there when I’m in between flights. It’s not planned out like a Gdamn dinner reservation. Like I’m going to take an entirely different itinerary so my layover is at off peak times and I can pretend like a real VIP🤦‍♂️ rather than a fool who thinks premium means squabbling over elbow space in a buffet line because I need to justify my CC AFs ( I have 2 platinums).
